THAME – The fictional ‘Midsomer’ village of Causton where ‘Inspector Barnaby‘ has investigated some of his most celebrated murder cases in the internationally popular TV series, Midsomer Murders.
Easy to get to by road or rail, Thame is the quintessential English market town, with its many pubs that serve traditional beer and good English pub food, cafes, historic buildings, links to the English Civil War and querky, independent shops – including Thame’s very own Chocolaterie.
Discover where the great English Patriot, John Hampden, died of his wounds in Thame, after he was mortally wounded at the battle of Chalgrove in 1643, during the English Civil War. It was this war that established the constitutional precedent that the monarch cannot govern without Parliament’s consent.
Visit the ancient Inn, The Bird Cage, where enemy soldiers were kept imprisoned during the Napolionic wars, and see the iron ring where the ‘dancing bear’ was attached while his itinerant keeper slated his thirst with a pint of ale.
