IT was obvious from the start that Wild Geese were in a determined frame of mind when they visited Chinnor RFC on Saturday (06/01/10. Early on the passage of play was rather frenetic with WG having the bulk of possession in the first 10 minutes.
When Chinnor got hold of the ball they were denied by a strong Irish defence. Chinnor did not help their cause by three wayward lineouts in succession. Eventually a patient build up by Chinnor resulted in Kieran Goss going over in the corner after 23 minutes. Hopkins converted with a fine kick from the touchline. The conditions were causing handling errors on both sides. The Wild Geese came steaming back into the game and on the 35th minute. They scored a well worked try when their scrum half put in a delightful cross field kick for Joseph to score under the posts to leave a simple conversion to level the scores. A Hopkins penalty on the verge of half time put Chinnor ahead at Half time 10-7.
Early on in the second half another neat chip saw Owen win a race to the touchline for another converted try. Chinnor then upped the tempo and restored their lead when Ben Manning went over from a rolling maul. From then on it was mostly Irish when they went over from a rolling maul. And then followed up with another try from a well judged chip over the top. With time running out Bingham went over for Chinnor only for the score to be ruled out by the touch judges intervention a third try for the hosts was added when George Oliver went over. With Chinnor chasing the game and running the ball out from deep a misplaced pass was readily accepted by the Irish to round off a well deserved victory 20-35.
