THAME Hockey Club has made a concerted efforted this season to push its Junior section forward, entering leagues for most age groups providing more hockey experience for them.
As a result the club’s Junior section has a total of 95 games scheduled this season, not including festivals and In2Hockey creating a need for umpires for approximately 45 – 50 of these games. The senior section has 56 home matches this season each needing two umpires per match. Currently the club has a small pool of umpires who week in, week out are umpiring the matches.
“As you can imagine,” said THC’s Secretary, Becs Gardner, “the stress is beginning to show and we aren’t halfway through the season yet.
“As our club approaches 300 members, I am hoping some oin the community will step forward to become umpires. Thame Hockey Club, supports new umpires by pairing them up with more experienced umpires until you feel confident to umpire a match with less support. If the Club does not have a larger pool of umpires, it may come to the point of having to cancel matches.
“This is the last thing any club wants to do,” continued Becs. “It’s a very straightforward process to organise a course run by England Hockey. I just need to know numbers. If you are interested, please email me and I will organise a course date to suit as many as possible.
“Our junior section provides many players for our senior section and we want this to continue. Having players playing with their own age groups will make a huge difference to their development and benefit the club in the long run.” Contact Bev via LINK HERE
