About us

THAME.NET is a news-based website serving the beautiful market town of Thame. It is managed and edited by an independent journalist, Sonja Francis, formerly the local news reporter for the Thame Gazette, and a regular contributor to, what was, The Oxford Channel’s ‘What the Oxfordshire Papers Say’, with presenter, Matt McNamara.

Sonja has lived in Thame since 1992, and founded Thamenews.net in 2003. As well as garnering news and local information relevant to Thame, she is dedicated to promoting Thame as a great place to live, to visit and to do business in. Sonja makes every effort to publish accurate and relevant Thame news as quickly as possible after the event, including reporting from weekly Town Council meetings, and from time-to-time,  particularly important district council meetings.

Sonja’s reporting has included important Crown Court cases that have attracted national media coverage.

Thame.net welcomes contributions from local organisations and regularly publishes football, rugby and Netball sports reports sent in on behalf of local clubs. Contact: editor@thame.net. ABOUT THAME

THAME is a vibrant and historic market town. With its attractive and well-maintained town centre,  Thame has many award-winning and unique shops, restaurants, cafes and local pubs to sample.  Our local independent retailers concentrate on offering top quality and a friendly personal service and this, along with the town’s varied attractions and a strong business community,  makes Thame a place to be appreciated by residents and visitors alike.

Our charming old market town in the county of Oxfordshire,  close to the Chiltern Hills,  is ideal as a base for visiting both the local area and the historic city of Oxford itself.  The town offers an ideal place for family shopping. It is served with ample parking, including over 600 free car parking spaces,  coffee shops,  restaurants, pubs and accommodation that varies from three star hotels, inns and friendly B & Bs.

How to find us

THAME  is easily accessible from the M40 Junction 7 and 8.  The nearest train station is  Chiltern Rail’s Haddenham and Thame Parkway which is on the main line between Marylebone Station, London and Birmingham.  There is a regular bus service to Oxford, Aylesbury and High Wycombe (Arriva route 280) and to surrounding villages.

The town is 14 miles east of Oxford,  10 miles south-west of Aylesbury and 47 miles from London.  To the west of  Thame the A418 joins with the M40 motorway linking London to Birmingham.  In the north eastern direction,  the A418 from Leighton Buzzard links with the M1 motorway at Aspley Guise and intersects with the A5 trunk road to the north. To the west of  Thame the A418  joins the A40 trunk road.  There are also roads from Thame to Princes Risborough  A4129, Chinnor B4445 and Bicester B4011.

THAME  is ideally situated to discover the beauty and tranquillity of the Thames and Chiltern area.  To the South of the town are the Chiltern Hills, designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty,  and The Ridgeway Path, with many public walkways where outstanding views of the surrounding area can be enjoyed.  Explore the delightful gardens at  Waterperry with its house,  formal and informal gardens, garden centre and tea rooms just to thc north of Thame.  The Oxfordshire way and cycleway meander through the countryside to the west of  Thame,  and to the east is the larger market town of Aylesbury.

Thame itself is a bustliug market town with a large boat shaped- market place. There is a twice weekly cattle market (Wednesdays and Fridays)  and a very popular street market every Tuesday.  There are many historic sites in the town,  including the original interior wall of the Greyhound Inn where John Hampden died of his wounds  received at the battle of Chalgrove Field during England’s Civil War.  The spectacular 13th Century Church of St Mary’s dominates the skyline and is open to the public most days.  Just a short stroll from the church is a magnificent Bandstand which came from the Wembley exhibition in 1924-25.  The Birdcage Inn in Cornmarket, with its resident ghost,  was built in the 15th Century and during the Napolionic wars housed prisoners awaiting trial.
