THAME Town Council?s Finance Committee has turned down a request for them to pay towards the cost of primary school swimming lessons.
Michael LeMesurier, who is a Governor of John Hampden Primary School, Thame, made the request on behalf of himself and Peter Hanson, the grandfather of two of the original three girls who raised a petition for a pool 12 year ago.
Mr LeMesurier asked the council if it would agree to pay the balance of the costs for swimming lessons, including transportation to and from the Leisure Centre, less the amount paid by the county council, which is approximately one third.
?By doing this,? he said, ?the council will be honouring the decision made at the inaugural meeting of the Swimming Pool Committee in November, 1991, that the three principles agreed and to be held in perpetuity, were: that the pool should be debt free, that it should not be a burden on the Ratepayers of Council Tax payers and that it should be a community pool available to all.?
According to Mr LeMesurier, at present each of the three Thame primary schools pays around
