New cycle parking for rail commuters
GOOD news for commuters who cycle to Haddenham and Thame Park Railway station. A new cycle park means that spaces have now been increased from 38 to 110. The cycle park has been jointly funded by Buckinghamshire County Council’s Access to Stations project, Chiltern Railways and the sustainable travel charity, Sustrans.
Haddenham & Thame Parkway is one of four stations in Bucks in the Access to Stations project where cycle parking capacity has now been doubled to encourage less car use and more cycling by commuters.
Sustrans’ Area Manager for the Thames Valley, Peter Challis, is currently writing travel plans for the four stations, which recommend possible infrastructure improvements to encourage cycling to the four stations, the others being Amersham, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross.
Bucks C C intend that by highlighting and improving the travel options available to rail users: “….the project will support the local economy by tackling congestion and reducing journey times. A move away from driving will also lower carbon emissions and improve the health of Buckinghamshire residents.”
I gather the idea is for something more than just a painted line along the side of the road for cyclists. A lot of preliminary work has been done to add to and upgrade existing bridle ways and footpaths across the fields. Some info HERE about a local group campaigning & HEREMost importantly, such a route is in the Thame Neighbourhood Plan.
So to cycle from Thame to ‘our’ rail station, we have to dodge gargantuan pot holes, speeding cars and hold up large lorries at our typical sedate 12mph while we struggle to cycle up the hilly twisty A418? No thanks, I value my life more than that!
Fine but…I don’t know how landowners would feel about it, but from Thame, an equivalent of the the Phoenix Trail would be the only feasible route to the station, unless the cyclists are young and very fit and can eat up the hill from the Aylesbury Road roundabout.
