FOLLOWING an announcement today from Tesco PLC that it is scrapping plans for 49 new stores, Tesco has told Thame.Net today that it intends to go ahead with plans to build a new supermarket on the edge of the town, on the DAF site.
Dave Lewis, Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’ve carefully reviewed our planned new store developments across the country and it remains our intention to submit plans for a new store in Thame. We continue to believe that the store will provide a valued service to the local community. The new store will provide a great shopping experience as well as bringing new jobs and investment to the area.”
The Tesco chief today unveiled a dramatic overhaul of the troubled supermarket chain to save money, including:
• 43 unprofitable stores to close and 49 planned stores shelved
• Thousands of management roles to be axed
• Halfords chief Matt Davies to run UK operation
• Head office downsized and moved
As well as falling profits and a sinking share price, Tesco was issued with four profit warnings last year and endured an accounting scandal.

Oh No It won’t!
I cannot think of one good reason to allow this dreadful company with it’s dreadful designs and appalling track record should be allowed within 20 miles of Thame.
This will completely wreck the town centre killing local business
We have enough national supermarkets already in Thame
Get motivated and help stop this dreadful idea.
It will kill the independents – big shame.
Tesco should not be able to develop on the daf site. It is too far out of town, is on the wrong side of town and is in a residential area. Not only will a supermarket there affect the high street but it will also affect the desirability of local houses such as those on pickenfield as traffic flow will be greatly increased. The cattle market is by far the better location for a supermarket although I don’t think thame needs a 4th supermarket. Sainsburys were campaigning to move on to the cattle market in 2013 so there is obviously a desire from them to do that and this would be my preference, with the existing sainsburys site given back to the high street as independent shops. TTC, SODC should not bow to the pressure of the corporate animal and should instead focus on how to develop the high street. Many plaudits were given as a result of the thame town plan, however nowhere in the plan did it mention the development of the daf site or the addition of a new supermarket to the town. How and why was this omitted ?
Good news, rather have a Tesco, than a Lidl !
Not sure how people can be pleased with this news.
Do they want Thame to turn into just another over-developed ex market town? no independent shops in the centre, another bland/ same old high street?
Say no to Tesco – we want to keep the heart in Thame.
Thame does not need a big Tesco! We have a wonderful range of independent shops on the High Street, plus 3 supermarkets already with Tesco already located not far away for those that really must!
This is not good , it will destroy the heart of our town
I’m beginning to think that Tesco are deliberately targeting Thame because it wants to undermine the neighbourhood plan process. Neighbourhood plans would stop them running railroad over residents, which they probably see as a threat
Excellent news!
Great news.
Good!
