Thame-Wide Drinking Ban Proposal
THAME town council wants to extend the town centre Designated Drinking Area Order, to cover the whole of Thame.
The decision to seek to extend the current order came at a meeting last night (13/03) of the town council’s Policy and Resources committee, in an effort to curb increased anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol consumption in some residential streets off the town centre and in the town’s recreation areas, especially Elms Park and Southern Road Recreation Ground.
The way the order works is that it gives extra powers to the police and Police Community Support officers to demand that drink in open vessels be handed to the officers if they believe that drunken behaviour is anti-social. It is not a blanket ban on drinking within the area, for instance picnicing in parks or street party events.
The council’s aim is to extend the current Order to include the whole town and Moreton Lane, and consultation with the police and the district council will be carried out to see if the extension is practical and enforceable.
