Historic Day For Thame Museum
MEMBERS of The John Hampden Regiment, in full costume, formed a guard of honour when Thame’s museum was officially opened on Saturday, by the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire who called the long-awaited event ‘a remarkable occassion.’
In his speech after the cutting of the green ribbon, the Lord Lieutenant, Hugo Bruner JP, gave special mention to the Museum’s founder, Rosalie Gibson, whose idea it was originally to transform, what was, the old Thame Magistrates Court, into a museum. He congratulated also the Thame Historical Society who had done so much towards establishing the dream of a museum for Thame and acknowledged the contributions made by Oxfordshire County Council, South Oxford District Council and Thame Town Council who bought the building in 2004 and now lease it to the Thame Museum Trust who run the facility.
“It is important for a town that is going to grow,” he said, “that its children know what has gone before and to know the story so far in their lives.”
