Motorists: Don’t be fooled by apparently improving conditions 07/01/10
MOTORISTS are being urged to drive carefully in what continues to be, treacherous conditions. Thames Valley Police and its partners are urging motorists not to be fooled by apparently improving weather conditions and to continue to drive with care.
Sub-zero temperatures and large quantities of ice and snow on the roads are still causing treacherous driving conditions.
The Thames Valley was among the coldest parts of the country overnight (6-7/1) and the Met office is forcasting that the cold snap is likely to continue for several days.
Before travelling, motorists are urged to make sure that all the windows on their car are clear of snow and ice. They should also ensure that their car is fully fuelled and that they have packed warm clothes, blankets, food and drink, and their mobile phone and in-car phone charger to allow them to communicate with friends and relatives if they get into problems.
Drivers who find themselves stuck in a position that obstructs access to emergency services and gritting vehicles, may have their vehicle recovered by the Highways Agency or Thames Valley Police and will be expected to pay for the recovery.
The public is reminded that emergency calls for police, fire and ambulance services should be made only in genuine emergency situations. Priority is being given to calls concerning life-threatening situations and assistance to vulnerable people. If you feel unwell, make use of NHS Direct. Only call an ambulance if advised to do so.
Local residents are encouraged to check on elderley or vulnerable neighbours in their area.
In addition to the obvious hazards on the road network, please also remember the dangers of trying to walk on iced ponds and lakes ? not only to yourself but to subsequent rescue attempts.
The public are advised to tune into local media broadcasts for updates on the situation in their area and what facilities may be available for stranded or vulnerable people.
If you need to contact Thames Valley Police for specific advice please call 0845 8 505 505 or contact your local authority.
