Thame Cinema 4 All presents MORRIS: A LIFE WITH BELLS ON 16/01/10
UK 2009 101 minutes 12A certificate – Morris: A Life with Bells On is a mock documentary that explores a peculiar and arcane English obsession. The film will be preceded by a demonstration by local group, Owlswick Morris!
The plot: Derecq Twist is a Squire of the respected Millsham Morris, with a lifetime ambition to dance the mystical and legendary Threeple Hammer Damson. But he is also possessed of a desire to drag Morris dancing into the 21st century with the introduction of the avant-garde Extreme Morris.
Like Scott in Strictly Ballroom, Derecq faces the hostility and condemnation of the Morris establishment, and is ultimately stripped of his hankies and staffs, forced into artistic exile in California, where he finds enthusiastic support from a flamboyant fringe LA Morris scene.
Charles Thomas Oldham’s delightful film takes the mock out of mockumentary – it is very funny without sneering and ironic without being superior. Instead we are persuaded of the joy of the dance and the satisfactions of quirky obsession.
This genuine heart-warmer has become a cult hit. Don’t miss your chance to see it.
Preceded by a brief Morris dancing exhibition by local group Owlswick Morris.
