THAME’S newly elected Mayor, Adam Buckland, helped cement in place the final concrete block of the foundations of Thame’s brand new Football stadium this afternoon.

With the help of John Howell MP and the newly elected Chairman of South Oxfordshire District Council, Mike Welply, the Mayor carried out his first official function in Thame, on what is an historic day for Thame football.

In his official address, the Mayor recalled the dark days of August 2005 was Thame United was forced to leave Windmill Road in Thame, and how they had since had to play at Aylesbury United and Wallingford Town’s grounds in the interim, thanks to their generosity.

He expressed his appreciation to The Thame Football Partnership, Thame Town Council, Sports Solutions GB and the Football Foundation, and also thanked SODC for its support.

“I would like to say a special thanks to the two Chairmen in the partnership, Jake Collinge and Tim Green,” said the Mayor. “The fact that there is a partnership at all is a huge credit to both men. Without people like them pushing these projects on, Thame would not have such amazing facilities.”

It is hoped that the pitch will be seeded within the next week, and hopefully, with plenty of sunshine and rain, will be ready to play on for the 2011 season.

The facility should be completed sometime in the Autumn this year, 2010.
