18/03/11…..The Social Network at Thame Cinema
THE next showing on Friday, March 18, at Thame Cinema 4 All, will be The Social Network – Cert:12A, David Fincher 2010, 120minutes. Starrring Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer, Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake.
THIS film captures Facebook’s origins in the somewhat claustrophobic male environment of Harvard in 2003. Computer science ‘nerd’ Mark Zukerberg is dumped by his girlfriend Erica and embarks on a vengeful campaign against her and creates Facemash a misogynistic site that invites the guys to rate campus girls against one another.
It is from this nasty beginning that Facebook emerges and by telling us of Facemash, Sorkin shows us the paranoid DNA of Facebook – friend number envy and cyber stalking; we then witness the betrayal and double dealing that accompanies Facebook’s journey to market. The film is in part boardroom drama and part conspiracy thriller. Conceived when Facebook was internet “top dog” (and we’re talking maybe 18 months ago) it has since been replaced in the internet zeitgeist by Twitter – a reminder of how fleeting success can be, anyone remember My Space or Friends Reunited?
NOTE FRIDAY PRESENTATION, this Friday March the 18th. Doors open 7.30, film starts 8pm Admission
