15/08/13 Win takes Thame cricketers to third in the table
THAME Firsts put on another impressive display against Banbury Seconds at Church Meadow on Saturday (10/08), in Cherwell League Division One. The nine-wicket win moved Thame up to third in the table, as Banbury were made to struggle with the bat, and then overwhelmed by Taylor and Soni who put on an undefeated 173 for the second wicket.
Thame won the toss and asked Banbury to bat as their trio of seamers sought to restrict the experienced Banbury top order. Will Rooney, Sam Lachlan and John Maynard duly bowled tight spells to apply the pressure and the visitors were soon 83 for four, and then 132 for seven. It was spinner Mike Higgs, however, who had the best analysis of three for 46 as Banbury finished on 172 for seven in their 53 overs.
When Thame batted, Mike Higgs was out first ball of the innings, leaving an in-cutter from veteran Banbury and Oxfordshire bowler, Keith Arnold. However, from this start Will Taylor and Phil Soni didn’t look back and commenced to hit the Banbury bowlers all over the ground. The partnership was unbroken when the total of 172 was passed with Taylor on 88 not out and Soni 74 not out.
